Beta-alanine is not a proteinogenic amino acid, meaning it does not function as a building block for muscle tissue. After ingestion, it binds with the biochemical histidine to form carnosine, a peptide that the body uses to suppress the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles.
The action of beta alanine can be traced through the stages of energy metabolism:
Glycolysis: Glucose ingested with food is broken down to provide the energy needed for intense physical exertion;
Lactate: The lactic acid produced in the process is transformed into lactate, which releases hydrogen ions;
Increased acidity: Ions increase the pH of the muscles;
Fatigue: Increased pH inhibits glucose breakdown and this limits the ability of muscles to contract;
