The liquid food supplement Melisa from the EkaMedica brand is a herbal formula based on an extract from the perennial herbaceous plant lemon balm ( Melissa officinalis ), which is widespread in Europe and Asia. The benefits of lemon balm have been known to people and used in various traditional medical practices for centuries. It is also mentioned in Homer's Iliad, and was also used by the Persian physician and scientist Avicenna, who wrote that it "makes the heart cheerful and happy". The plant is the main ingredient in the alcoholic herbal extract Karmolis, created in the 14th century, which is still available in pharmacies today.
Lemon balm contains a compound known as rosmarinic acid, which helps increase levels of the amino acid GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) in the brain. GABA is a neurotransmitter that prevents overexcitation of the nervous system, thus providing the body with the opportunity to relax and unwind.
