Ecological Formulas® Psorex / Ecological Formulas® Psorex is a dietary supplement that helps maintain the normal condition of the skin and connective tissue. The product contains fumaric acid of reagent grade. Fumaric acid is the trans-isomer of malic acid and an intermediate in the citric acid cycle, also popularly known as the Krebs cycle. Psorex / Psorex has a beneficial effect on dermatological conditions such as psoriasis, granulomatous skin diseases, lupus erythematosus, malignant melanoma, pityriasis rubra pilaris, alopecia areata and others.
Fumaric acid or transbutenedioic acid is a white crystalline chemical compound widely distributed in nature. It is a key intermediate in the tricarboxylic acid cycle for the biosynthesis of organic acids in humans and other mammals. This acid is also an essential component in supporting normal plant development.
Like vitamin D, it is synthesized by the body, in the skin, during exposure to sunlight. It is associated with the normal functioning of malic acid and is involved in the production of energy obtained from food.
Fumaric acid and its effects on the skin :
Skin diseases can be physically and emotionally debilitating for patients due to the discomfort and cosmetic disfigurement they cause. This is especially true for psoriasis.
Psoriasis is a common skin disease that affects between 2-4 percent of the population. The characteristic psoriatic lesion is a sharply demarcated red rash covered with overlapping silvery-white scales. The scalp, nails, elbows, knees, and ankles are commonly affected.
Clinical studies have shown that fumaric acid esters are effective against the symptoms of psoriasis. They are believed to alter the functions of leukocytes, keratinocytes and/or vascular endothelium. Fumaric acid esters are small molecules with immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
Fumaric acid is normally present in every cell of the body as a component of the citric acid cycle, which is responsible for the production of cellular energy. In healthy individuals, fumaric acid is formed in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Patients suffering from psoriasis cannot produce enough fumaric acid, and therefore cell division and function are impaired.
When fumaric acid is taken both orally and topically, the condition of most patients improves dramatically.
