Natural Factors' product provides vitamin C buffered with calcium – this special form, known as calcium ascorbate, is pH neutral and extremely gentle on the stomach.
Unlike other forms of vitamin C, calcium ascorbate does not cause gastrointestinal discomfort, including abdominal pain and diarrhea. It is recommended for people who require long-term intake of high-dose vitamin C.
Vitamin C is water-soluble and therefore quickly leaves the body, but when taken in the form of calcium ascorbate, its loss through urine is reduced. This is why calcium ascorbate is suitable for single-dose administration and is the preferred form in cases where the body has an increased need for vitamin C.
What is buffered vitamin C? Different mineral salts of ascorbic acid are mixed to obtain a solution with a neutral pH (7). This increases the stability of the solution (or solid form), does not change the acidity in the stomach and blood, and is better absorbed. Ascorbic acid reacts with the corresponding bases (magnesium, calcium or sodium) to obtain its mineral salts (calcium ascorbate, magnesium ascorbate, etc.).
Taking calcium ascorbate contributes to:
→ stimulation of immune function and protection against infections.
→ the normal condition of bones and teeth;
→ reduction of oxidative stress;
→ improving blood circulation and maintaining the health of blood vessels.
Vitamin C is most popular as a means of strengthening the immune system, but it also contributes to the growth and repair of tissues, and in combination with calcium, indirectly helps maintain bones and teeth.
Vitamin C stimulates the production of collagen, a protein involved in the structure of cartilage, tendons, blood vessels and skin. As a participant in collagen synthesis, vitamin C protects arteries from damage, and thanks to its antioxidant properties, it reduces the oxidation of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and slows the formation of atherosclerotic plaques and the development of atherosclerosis.
Taking vitamin C for colds and flu can reduce the intensity and duration of symptoms, and limit the risk of complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis.
Since vitamin C is rapidly depleted during high levels of stress, it is believed that taking it during stressful periods may help prevent immune collapse.
The calcium ascorbate contained in Natural Factors is a compound of vitamin C with calcium, which is chemically a pH neutral salt. It is obtained by mixing 9 parts ascorbic acid and one part calcium. This results in a pH balanced form of vitamin C that is well tolerated by people with stomach problems.
