According to scientists, the fruits of the tropical acerola tree ( Malpighia emarginata ), native to Central America and the Caribbean, provide the body with 50 to 100 times more vitamin C than lemons and oranges. In different countries in the region, they are called Barbados, Puerto Rican, or Antillean cherries.
Like most other stone fruits and blueberries, acerola is low in calories and rich in phytonutrients, vitamins (C, B1, B2, B3) and minerals (iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium).
