What is bile?
A yellow-green liquid consisting of 95% water, in which bile acids and salts, phospholipids, cholesterol, steroid hormones and other components are dissolved. It is produced in the liver, from where it is transported through the bile ducts to the gallbladder. After food intake, the gallbladder delivers bile to the small intestine.
What are its main functions in the body:
- stimulates the breakdown of fats and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, K;
- regulates nutrient metabolism in the liver;
- helps eliminate toxins, metabolic waste and excess cholesterol;
- contributes to the excretion of excess bilirubin;
- is important for the balance of the intestinal microbiome;

Under normal conditions, the gallbladder releases stored bile into the small intestine in response to food. Bile, which provides bile salts and acids, initiates the breakdown and absorption of fats.
