Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a tree-like tropical vine found in the Amazon rainforest. The plant climbs up to 30 meters high using hook-like spines that resemble a cat's claw, hence its name.
The roots, stems and leaves of the plant have been used by indigenous people for medicinal purposes for centuries. Today, it has been found that there are more than 30 different compounds in the stems of this plant, including flavonoids, sterol fractions, tannins, glycosides, oleanic acid, epicatechin, quinic acid and carboxy alkyl esters. To all of these, the plant owes its antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
One of the biggest benefits of cat's claw extract is its immune-boosting effect. On the one hand, this is due to its ability to increase the number of white blood cells that fight infections and viruses. On the other hand, it protects cells from oxidative stress and thus supports the normal function of the body.
