Ginseng has been used for centuries in traditional medical practices by the peoples of Northeast Asia to improve cognitive abilities, concentration, and physical endurance.
What is Korean ginseng?
Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng), also called true ginseng, Chinese ginseng, and Asian ginseng, is a perennial herbaceous plant native to the mountainous regions of East Asia. It is one of the longest-lived plant species on the planet. The fleshy root is used for medicinal purposes.
Its history in traditional Eastern medical practices stretches back thousands of years. There are written records of its use from the first century BC. By the 16th century, ginseng was so popular that controlling its habitat became a problem.
The main beneficial biochemicals in its composition are called ginsenosides or panaxosides. They are steroidal saponins that support the condition and function of the brain, heart and a number of other organs and systems in the human body. The roots of the plant are also rich in glycans, flavonoids, polysaccharides, vitamins, essential oils, zinc and other minerals.
What are the health effects of Korean ginseng?
→ Stimulates brain function – Korean ginseng stimulates the function of brain cells, improving concentration and cognitive abilities. A number of scientific studies confirm the beneficial effects of the plant extract in patients suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It has also been found to support the therapy of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in adolescents between the ages of 6 and 12.
→ Helps improve mood and reduce stress – Clinical trials have shown that regular intake of Korean ginseng root extract for eight days significantly reduced anxiety and stress compared to a placebo group. During the experiment, patients became visibly calmer and more focused.
→ Reduces fatigue and increases energy levels – It has been found that the bioactive substances in Korean ginseng, and specifically certain polysaccharides and oligopeptides, help limit oxidative stress and stimulate energy production by cells, thereby contributing to reducing fatigue.
Supports Immune System Function – Korean ginseng also has a beneficial effect on immune function. The root extract helps the body effectively fight infections and diseases and maintain immune homeostasis by improving the regulation of all immune cells, including macrophages, natural killer cells, dendritic cells, T- and B-cells. It also contributes to the production of antimicrobial biochemicals such as polyacetylene compounds, which act as a defense mechanism against bacterial and viral infections.
→ Improves sexual function in men – Korean ginseng roots have been used for centuries to treat sexual dysfunction in Eastern traditional medical practices. Modern research shows that ginsenoids stimulate erections by directly promoting the dilation of blood vessels and relaxation of erectile tissue through the release of nitric oxide from endothelial cells.
Korean ginseng also has pronounced anti-inflammatory properties, helps get rid of excess weight, improves lung function, contributes to regulating blood sugar levels, and relieves symptoms of menopause.
